I was never a fan of this song until I first heard The Blind Boys of Alabama’s Christmas album (which is possibly my favorite Christmas album ever). They did a version of it (which the changed melody and chord structure from mine are based off of) with the enigmatic Tom Waits and it is amazing. Once I heard that version and really gave some attention to the beautifully written lyrics of this song I was in love. In true Tom Waits fashion I pushed in a very percussive direction with this song. Merry Christmas!
